1951–52 Stoke City F.C. season
The 1951–52 season was Stoke's 52nd season of league football and the 31st in the First Division.
Overview
In the summer of 1951 there was a major change at boardroom level at Stoke as chairman Mr H. Booth stepped down after 13 years and Mr T. Preece took over in temporary charge.
Stoke made an awful start to the 1951–52 season with a 6–0 mauling at Newcastle, and things didn't get better for Stoke as they only manage to claim two points out of 22 which meant they were rooted to the bottom of the table. Results did start to improve when Irish striker Sammy Smyth joined the club and he went on to score 12 goals. Goalkeeper Dennis Herod made history when he score in a game against Aston Villa. Stoke manage to avoid relegation by just three points and the future didn't look that good for Stoke fans.
After such a poor season manager Bob McGrory decided to resign and after 31 years at Stoke as both player and manager he would be a big miss for Stoke. The Stoke directors turned to former Wolves defender Frank Taylor.
